Ho‘olu komo la kaua (please join us) for a celebration of life, companionship and great food at a traditional Hawaiian luau on the island of Maui. The original luau was called ‘aha‘aina or pa‘ina, meaning royalty. Modern luaus have been in existence since 1819 when King Kamehameha II discontinued the social and religious taboo of not allowing men and women to share meals together. The name “lu‘au” came about from the popular and most common dish served at the luau feast that consisted of tender taro leaves with chicken rolled in them, baked with coconut milk. All the dishes served at the first luaus where eaten with one's fingers, and guests ate sitting on lauhala mats on the floor. The luau menu consisted of fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and bowls of poi, a paste made from the taro root.
Today, things are different in the Islands, but the tradition of the Hawaiian luau remains. A luau means spending time together with family and friends, enjoying great food and entertainment. Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and experience a Hawaiian luau on Maui. What all Maui luaus have in common is a variety of great foods, cultural demonstrations, including hands-on activities, and exciting Polynesian entertainment. Listen to the music of the islands of Tahiti, Aotearoa, Samoa and Hawaii. Choose your favorite Maui luau and make your reservation today.
